Asthma Children`s Camp Program Volunteer


Asthma Foundation of NSW

Asthma Children’s Camp is a fun filled, week long annual camp.
14th - 18th January 2008, Milson Island Dept of Sport and Rec. camp.


Do you have experience working with children in a support role?

Principal Accountabilities:
To work within a team of volunteers (together with Asthma Foundation NSW staff) to support children attending the camp, encouraging them to learn about asthma and asthma management in a fun and safe environment

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Participate in an orientation session with the Volunteer Coordinator at the beginning of camp.

2. Coordinate and support children in a Medications Group:


  • Monitor and support children every morning and evening to take their asthma medications using correct technique.

  • Monitor and support children every morning and evening to complete and record peak flow readings using correct technique.

  • Attend DSR organised activities with the children and seek opportunities to build their participation in camp activities and confidence.

  • Use ‘free time’ to support and encourage children in activity participation, building friendships and learning more about asthma.

  • Assist in the collection of evaluation data from the children about their experience at the camp

3. Support the Department of Sport, Recreation and Tourism (DSR) staff to run day and evening activities and manage the children as requested by the DSR staff.


4. Attend asthma information sessions with the children and assist the asthma educator or camp coordinator to deliver the sessions as requested


5. Adhere to DSR policies, including their policy on alcohol that supports the campsite as an alcohol free zone. This means that volunteers cannot bring alcohol onto the campsite or consume alcohol during the week.


6. Undertake any other activities as requested by the Asthma Camp Volunteer Coordinator or Asthma Foundation NSW staff Skills, Knowledge and Attributes.

  • Knowledge of OH & S issues

Desirable



  • Asthma knowledge

  • Undertaking or undertaken a health related tertiary level course
